Most North American farm workers were born in villages in rural Mexico, which workers leave to work on Mexican and US farms. During the late 1990s, the number of people leaving Mexican villages to work on US farms increased by more than 50 percent, according to a January-February 2003 survey of 1,760 households in 80 rural communities. By contrast, the number of people leaving Mexican villages to work on farms in Mexico decreased.
