Average Employment in US Agriculture, 1910-2000



Between 1910 and 2000, average employment of operator and family workers on US farms fell by 80 percent, while average employment of hired workers fell 74 percent. The family worker concept is comprehensive but the hired worker concept is not. Over half of the family workers also have nonfarm jobs, while about 2.5 million workers are employed for wages sometime during a typical year on US farms.
