The New Rural Poverty

We are pleased to announce the publication of The New Rural Poverty: Agriculture and Immigration in California. 2006. Urban Institute Press http://www.uipress.org/). Part 1 of this three-part, eight-chapter book reviews patterns of migration to fill US farm jobs and the interactions between the availability of migrants and the number of farm jobs. Part 2 deals with immigrants in particular commodities and areas, presenting the perspectives of farm employers, local leaders, and migrant advocates on the changing face of rural America from California's coastal and inland valleys to Midwestern meatpacking towns. Part 3 deals with the proposed AgJOBS immigration reform and the challenge of integrating immigrants and their children who settle in agricultural areas.
