Number in Poverty and Poverty Rate: 1959-2011
Some 46.2 million people, 15 percent of US residents, had incomes below the poverty line of $23,021 for a family of four in 2011, down from 15.1 percent in 2010. The poverty rate reached its lowest levels in the past two decades during the late 1990s economic boom.
