US and CA Farms and Hired Labor Expenses, 2012

Farmers are almost 10 percent of US employers, but farm wages are less than one percent of US wages. Within agriculture, most farm wages are paid by the relatively few farms that have labor expenses of $100,000 or more. In 2012, the less-than-10-percent of US farm employers that had labor expenses of $100,000 or more accounted for three-fourths of farm labor expenses. In California, a fifth of farm employers had expenses of $100,000 or more, and they accounted for over 90 percent of the state’s farm labor expenses.
